Apple users can no longer access their Apple ID without any explanation

There appears to be a increasingly widespread Apple ID outage affecting users this evening. A number of people on social media say they were logged out of their Apple ID on multiple devices Friday evening and forced to reset their password before logging back in…

Have you been signed out of your Apple ID?

We received our first tip on this around 8 p.m. ET. In the hours that followed, the issue gained momentum on social media.

Apple’s System Status web page does not indicate that any of its services are experiencing problems this evening. Still, it’s clear from reports on social media that something weird is going on behind the scenes at Apple. Some of us here at 9to5Mac were also directly affected by the problem.

People are signed out of their Apple ID on all their devices. If you try to sign in with your original Apple ID password, your account will be locked. You will then be required to reset your password before you can log in again. There seems to be no rhyme or reason why Why it happens.

It’s unclear at this time if what’s happening Friday night has anything to do with the current issue of password reset attacks that we’ve been tracking for several weeks.

Additionally, if you have Stolen Device Protection enabled, signing out of an Apple ID randomly can present a particularly big headache if you’re far from a reliable location.

Another problem: If you reset your Apple ID password, any app-specific passwords you previously set up through iCloud will also be reset.

I’ve requested more information from Apple and will update if I hear anything in response. Have you been signed out of your Apple ID on your devices this evening? Let us know in the comments.
