The software engineer shared a photo from his hospital bed on social media, along with a message of gratitude for those who helped him.

Mr De Los Rios Polania added: “I am recovering. I have a long journey ahead but I am very confident that this trauma will end soon.”
“Hero” protected his family
His sister Jessica De Los Rios, 31, described him as a “hero” for protecting her family from the attacker.
“For us, he’s our hero.” she says. “He protected them, my niece and my sister-in-law.
“They were literally sleeping and opened their eyes to see a man with a big machete.
“He felt helpless in the moment, but for us he is our hero. It could have been extremely worse.”
