The 16-year-old runaway child of billionaire Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield is considered “at risk” due to a “previous suicide threat”, cops have warned.
Mint Butterfield, who is non-binary and uses both genders, was reported missing early Monday after fleeing their mother’s home in Bolinas, California — leaving behind a note, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said .
The teen’s mother, Caterina Fake, founder of Flickr, alerted authorities immediately after discovering the letter and warned that Mint could have headed to the notoriously dangerous Tenderloin District of San Francisco.
“At this time, we have no information to believe that Mint was taken against their will,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Thursday.
“The Sheriff’s Office considers Mint to be a voluntarily missing juvenile who is ‘at risk’ due to a prior reported suicide threat,” they added, without elaborating.
Mint, who was last seen around 10 p.m. Sunday by her mother, ran away from home with a suitcase “during the night or early in the morning,” authorities said.
“It is unclear how Mint left the area, as they did not have access to a vehicle or a phone,” the sheriff’s office noted.
Mint, who lived with their mother and was enrolled in a private school in the Napa area, reportedly had a history of substance abuse, the San Francisco Standard reported.
They were known to frequent the Tenderloin neighborhood, known for its violent crime, rampant homelessness and open-air drug market.
“Marin County deputies entered Mint into the Missing and Unidentified Persons System (MUPS) and sent All Points Bulletin flyers to surrounding law enforcement agencies with a description and photograph of Mint,” a the sheriff’s office said.
“Working with the San Francisco Police Department, detectives from both agencies attempted to track Mint down, but were unable to locate him.”
Mint’s father, Stewart Butterfield, co-founded the messaging app Slack in 2013, but left the company after Salesforce acquired the platform for $28 billion in 2021.
His net worth is around $1.6 billion, according to Forbes.
Meanwhile, the teen’s mother founded the imaging service Flickr with Butterfield in 2004 and sold the company to Yahoo! in 2005 for around $30 million.
Fake and Butterfield married in 2001 but divorced in 2007 – the same year their daughter was born.
Mint is their only child together.
