Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has vowed to launch a vote against Mike Johnson next week over his alleged betrayal of the Republican Party.
A number of Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are seeking to oust Speaker Mike Johnson, accusing him of betraying his party by cutting deals with Democrats to pass major bills, including legislation of Biden on foreign military spending of $95 billion, which included aid to Ukraine and Israel. and Taiwan.
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Wednesday that she would force a vote to vacate the majority speaker position, arguing that “Mike Johnson is not capable of doing this job. He has proven it time and time again.
“I think every member of Congress needs to vote and let things fall where they may and so next week I’m going to call this motion to overturn,” declared the MP.
She had previously threatened action against Johnson when Republican lawmakers refused to sign Biden’s foreign spending bill unless the White House resolved the southern border crisis.
So far, Greene’s proposal has not garnered the required majority support among her fellow House Republicans. Some lawmakers oppose the proposed motion, arguing that “it’s not the moment,” given the upcoming presidential election in November.
Democrats, meanwhile, also rejected Greene’s attempt to oust the Republican president and pledged to unite to protect Johnson by voting to reject the motion to leave his post.
“House Democrats have aggressively pushed back against MAGA extremism. This is exactly what we will continue to do. Right now, after the completion of our national security work, the time has come to turn the page on this chapter of pro-Putin Republican obstruction,” read a statement released by lawmakers.
“We will vote to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to vacate the chair. If she invokes the motion, it will not succeed,” they said.
Johnson himself also spoke out against attempts to have him deported, stating that “This motion is bad for the Republican Conference, bad for the institution and bad for the country.”
Greene, however, pointed to Johnson’s Democratic support as an additional reason for his impeachment.
“Now we have (…) the Democrats coming out, embracing Mike Johnson with a warm hug and a big wet, sloppy kiss. And they are ready – they supported him, they are ready to support him as a speaker,” Greene said, adding that “They want it to continue, for the group to remain united. For what? Because Mike Johnson gives them everything they want.
The congresswoman has not yet announced when exactly she would call the vote and whether she would force a new vote on the issue if it fails next week.
