There are spring and summer trends that are still acceptable, like florals and bright colors, but if you’re in the know about fashion, you might be thinking, “Flowers?” For spring? Innovative. (Girls who get it, get it.) To be original this season, you need to embrace unexpected wardrobe choices, such as kitten heels, hot pants, chunky sandals, and maybe even capris. I wanted to take it a step further, so I asked Marissa Galante Frank, Bloomingdale’s fashion director, for her expert opinion on what’s really worth wearing this spring and summer.

White sneakers
Just because something is a classic doesn’t mean it’s boring. “The white sneaker is a closet staple,” Galante Frank said. “I love white sneakers with retro energy,” she continued. Tons of celebrities have proven her point, with Emily Blunt, Gisele Bündchen and Katie Holmes reaching for foolproof shoes.
The popularity of white sneakers is certainly due to their ease of styling. Pair this no-fuss Veja option with olive pants and a linen top for a polished ensemble, or consider pairing these Autry Medalist low-top sneakers with straight-leg jeans and a simple tee. There’s no wrong way to wear white sneakers, making them a simple addition to any wardrobe.
Lightly washed denim
Jeans are the foundation of any notable casual look, but in spring and summer, “lighter wash denim is always preferred,” Galante Frank said. The worn aesthetic brings an effortless touch to your outfit, coordinating exceptionally well with colors like soft yellow, pale pink and white.
Cindy Crawford caught my eye by rocking this exact trend in March, while Pamela Anderson did the same. Each opted for a roomier version, which Galante Frank calls “comfortable” for warmer temperatures. It also balances the proportions of fitted tank tops and tube tops, playing on the small shirt-big pants phenomenon.
Mesh Flats
What do Jennifer Lawrence, Chrissy Teigen and Jennifer Lopez have in common? They rely on mesh flats for breathability and comfort, just like Galante Frank. “As a New Yorker, flats have always been a key part of my shoe wardrobe,” she said. “This season, the ballet mesh (flat) is one of my favorite new updates,” she added, crediting the “breathability” and “airy freedom” the style offers.
Aside from being a popular choice among celebrities and style experts, mesh ballet flats are also being incorporated into spring and summer runway looks, becoming the “feminine detail of choice,” according to Galante Frank . So, wear your Vagabond square toe shoes or your Dolce Vita flats perfect for a confident bride.
Trench coats
There’s perhaps no bigger trend than trench coats – and Galante Frank agrees. “It’s my favorite mid-season outerwear piece and adds a touch of refinement and sophistication to every outfit,” she said. I understand where she’s coming from; I’ve worn my own version left and right, coordinating it with denim, dresses, heels and more.
Trench coats are making a bold entrance because of what Galante Frank calls “high utility,” which encompasses everything from cargo pants to lug-soled shoes. In other words, everyone adds a “touch of ‘tough'” to their wardrobe. Plus, trench coats provide an easy-on-and-off top layer for the fluctuating weather conditions of spring.
Linen blend pants
I’m a linen pants enthusiast, so when Galante Frank called the pants she “loves” one of her favorite spring styles, I was thrilled. Not only do stars like Meghan Markle and Jennifer Lawrence rely on these bottoms, but they’re ideal for the windy season, offering a lightweight, flowy feel. Best of all, they’re refined and elegant, dressing easily with blouses, t-shirts and sandals.
Consider a cloud white DKNY version for a crisp addition that will liven up any outfit, while this Aqua striped find nods to Parisian style. Meanwhile, the Splendid Drawstring Cropped Pants are ideal for both lounging around the house and wearing out: who doesn’t love a two-for-one?
Raffia tote bag
The item everyone needs in their spring wardrobe? An elevated raffia tote similar to Reese Witherspoon’s Clare V. shoulder bag, Hailey Bieber’s woven bag, and Kylie Jenner’s straw handbag, all featuring earthy materials and bohemian style. Galante Frank prefers a leather-trimmed option, like this Madewell snap closure option or this flared Coach find; however, soft straw tote bags are just as good.
Such discoveries fit into the popular nautical vibe that “permeates fashion,” Galante Frank said. So, confidently coordinate your new bag with boat shoes, stripes, lightweight knits, and beach-ready separates.
